The Cole Recovery 2

Cole Recovery 2: a post-exercise recovery footwear product customised to an athlete’s idiosyncratic needs and desires enables the creation of an ideal recovery experience for that athlete

Cole Recovery 2

Abstract

The process of recovery from sustained physical strain on the body during exercise is an often talked about topic, but is rarely explored in detail. Previous research and developments have addressed singular aspects in both the biomechanical and material properties, yet never integrated into a product. Any such attempts at recovery footwear fail to take account of the progression of an athlete’s recovery; this problem needs to be addressed. This project considers the development and evolution of the physical recovery that athletes endure, the factors that lead to differing individual needs, and how customisations in recovery footwear benefit the user. The recovery footwear industry lacks products that can support the diverse needs of athletes and often falls short of the necessary requirements for the athlete’s physical longevity and rehabilitation. Scientific literature on the biomechanics of footwear and recovery informs design decisions in the creative development of a customisable footwear product for recovery. A footwear product that is customised to the user and assists them in their unique recovery journey greatly benefits and assists the athletic and fitness community. This informed, practice-based research project offers strategies and approaches for the application of periodic lattice-based cellular structures paired with additive manufacturing methods for the footwear industry that can be applied at a viable commercial level.

Design Intent

Current solutions frequently neglect the specific requirements for athletes within their post exercise recovery. Specialised footwear can be produced through research driven design to provide athletes with elevated levels of comfort, support, and targeted features that are conducive to the recovery process. This approach accelerates recovery, reduces likelihood of injuries and optimises peak athletic performance. Customisable solutions, tailored to the particular needs of individuals, can further elevate the recovery experience by designing for both the physical and psychological aspects of the post-exercise period. Within the current offerings of post-exercise footwear, existing options are often inadequate and do not provide a supportive recovery experience. Current solutions such as birkenstocks, thongs and slides provide a momentary respite with their loosely padded designs, but they do little more than that, failing to deliver an effective recovery experience. For athletes, an effective post-exercise routine will increase athletic longevity, both in the short and long term. A product service system delivers a 3D-printed, customisable, post-activity footwear product that supports sustainable recovery for the foot, ankle and lower leg. Customisation, recovery, breathability, support, aesthetics and comfort are addressed to maximise the footwear performance in an optimal recovery process. In a data-driven design process, the bespoke needs of each athlete are considered for a tailored recovery solution. With additive manufacturing, a recovery footwear product that harmonises with an individual’s post-exercise idiosyncrasies is now a reality.

Research questions:

1 - How can we enhance the recovery experience for athletes post exercise?

2 - Can customisation provide a more elevated recovery experience for athletes post exercise?

3 - How can we improve and strengthen public perception of the necessity of recovery in the longevity of athletes?

For athletes, an effective post-exercise routine will increase athletic longevity, both in the short and long term.
