Hako
by Winardi Kurniawan
Project Description
The Hako results from an extensive research project into furniture for rented households. The process explored how renting policies, moving operations, and ergonomic difficulties that students and young adults experience contribute to furniture waste and overconsumption. Thus, it reflects the need to adapt and constantly evolve elements for a successful product intervention.
The design allows the shelving unit to adapt and produce multiple pieces of furniture to suit the user’s needs and taste. Questions such as ‘how to involve the user in the whole design process?’ and ‘how can the user feel as if they are designing their own furniture?’ were met with options for customisation. Informed by emotional design and these questions, various materials, colours, and textured tiles are provided for the user to select. The unit is designed to aid creativity and create an emotional bond that could drastically reduce consumption. The technical detail makes those features possible; simple wood joineries and plastic fasteners provide easier moving, packaging, and assembly/disassembly operations.
The unit’s flat-packability allows for seamless customisation and assembly/disassembly operations throughout its lifecycle, making easier maintenance and part replacement as necessary.
