Joey Cot
by Eve Taylor
Project Description
The Joey Cot is the result of an extensive research project into the sleeping environments of infants and young children. The process explored the risks of SIDS and flat-head syndrome, as well as the ergonomic difficulties that parents experience in raising their children. The design aims to provide an infant with a safe and comfortable relationship with sleep that will hopefully stay with them for life. The Joey Cot aims to ‘flip’ the expectation of how a newborn interacts with their sleeping environment. The bassinet is a transitional stage that creates a breathable and comfortable environment that cradles the infant’s body. When the infant reaches 6 months, the entire product is flipped and turns into a functioning cot that can accommodate the child up to 3 years. The design was heavily influenced by manufacturing considerations in order to produce the working prototype.
