Rope Stool
by Riley Blakers
Project Description
Over the last few years, climbing as a sport has become increasingly popular especially since its introduction in the Olympics in 2020. As a result, the demand for climbing gear has increased dramatically in Australia and one of the most common items used is dynamic nylon climbing rope. Climbing rope after 1-3 years on average is forced to be retired for safety and most of the time ends in landfill. The increase in the importance of sustainable design in today’s climate has influenced the need to give climbing rope a second chance, by developing an original manufacturing technique using only rope, to create new value for the climbing industry.
The Rope Stool is an exploration of the possibilities to create upcycled quality furniture with old climbing rope. The shape of the stool is inspired by the natural properties of rope as it coils and interweaves around itself, showing off the raw beauty of its vibrant colours and patterns. The wear and tear of each rope is unique to its experiences with previous climbers, displaying a rich history through its repurposed life.
The stool stands 400mm tall and is 350mm wide. It has 4 gear loops to clip various items to, such as climbing tape or chalk bags and is held together entirely from around 200 metres of climbing rope.
