Project Description
The project aims to develop an innovative public toilet facility that incorporates technology to reduce and prevent the risk of falls among the elderly and improve toilet safety. In this project, an emergency call system, human resources and handrail facilities assist each other to make the system safer and more accessible.
In China, the population is aging rapidly, and health stresses for the elderly are rising. The risk of falling has become the most common daily problem encountered by the elderly. Due to the disabilities caused by chronic diseases, it is difficult for the elderly to stand up as easily as young people, and they have to rely on tools or other people to help them. However, Chinese public squatting toilets do not provide fall prevention facilities for the elderly. It is important to design fall prevention facilities for public squatting toilets. Therefore, the project developed a handrail to help the elderly stand up with an emergency call system. It can be installed in public squatting toilets and requires two hands to hold onto the handrails to support the weight of the elderly and help them stand up with more ease. The call system allows them to be rescued in the event of a fall.
The project also explores aesthetic areas, such as minimalist appearance and colour variations. The design attempts to combine aesthetics and ergonomics to break the clinical stereotypes of elderly products and establish a new generation of design in this field. In addition to reducing the rate of falls in public squatting toilets, the product is intended to provide greater independence for the elderly.
