Barrier Bench

by Luca Moujaes

The concrete barrier bench slots onto concrete barriers currently used in City of Sydney’s outdoor dining program and creates mindful interactions with overlooked public objects.

Project Description

This semester, I set out to explore how people can better interact with our shared public spaces, which represent our shared values.

In this most recent lockdown, I ended up walking through almost every street in my five kilometre radius and wanted to create something as an ode to the overlooked spaces and objects that are under appreciated, and that I personally came to discover during this time.

I designed a frame that can turn concrete barriers, part of our public spaces that is often overlooked, into an interactive part of our lives. Here is my concrete barrier bench (2021) made of recycled aluminium and roadside waste timber. Designed to create mindful interaction with public space and objects.

I think more description is needed; what are its unique features apart from being made of waste material; how does it invite passers by to occupy it and interact with it? There is description in the captions but I think it needs to be here too.

The frame requires ‘assembly’ for a seat to develop sustainable practices and mindful interaction with one’s spaces.

The practice of sourcing waste material to create a seat encourages users to interact with their localities more mindfully.

Recreational testing.
