aMEba Pendant
by Joe Hinrichsen
Project Description
aMEba is a customisable jewellery piece, allowing users to express themselves through non-verbal communication. These non-verbal signals work as a system, allowing users to connect with others who share similar identity traits to themselves. After constantly hearing individuals around me complain about their struggles with the modern dating scene, I discovered a problem space I was keen on addressing. By combining advantages of the current ‘tech heavy’ online dating scene and multimodal, communicative jewellery, the aim was to create different methods of self-expression and identity. To allow users to break down initial barriers of compatibility within the analogue world while understanding the importance of individual consent.
Amoebas are ever-changing, single-celled organisms, ultimately a prime example of individualism. By using amoebas as inspiration for shape and form, the idea is to create a metaphor of every user as an individual organism, constantly changing and evolving their self-expression. Two years of COVID-19 lockdowns has resulted in the reliance on online dating platforms; the aMEba helps break down the initial conversation barriers for individuals returning to dating in the analogue world.
