Ori: Hanging Art Stool

by Davina Wijaya

Ori Hanging Art Stool

Project Description

For the Furniture Production and Materials elective, I decided to take a more fun and unconventional approach in designing common furniture. Based on the inconvenient and unattractive stools purchased by my father, I decided to explore how we can make additional seating more beautiful while providing space-saving storage solutions. Extensive research was done on existing space-saving furniture in the market to initiate the brainstorming ideation process. Through ample design-driven research of experimenting different folding techniques and prototyping sketch models, the Ori hanging art stool was developed. Ori is a multi-function stool that adopts the use of Origami folding techniques. Built with felt, wood and strong magnets, it allows the stool to be flexible, allowing it to be easily folded when needed while maintaining the flat-lay form. This ensures that the stool can be displayed as a form of art when not in use while also allowing it to be easily accessible when needed.

Bio

Davina is a product designer from Indonesia with a great passion in creating sustainable solutions. After learning about Manuj Bhargava’s philanthropy initiatives of designing products that saves lives, I realized the power well-designed products possessed in changing lives for those who needs it the most. From there, I strive to make a positive impact in the world by designing practical and sustainable solutions. Throughout my product design education, I have pushed myself by designing products such as ‘Serubin’ an interactive public trash can, ‘Out of the Box’ an educational toy to promote design thinking and ‘Bloom’ Loop packaging collectibles. As an enthusiastic recent graduate from Product design, I am always looking to expand my knowledge further and acquire more experiences. With fundamental design knowledge, a deep passion sustainability and experience in marketing, I understand the whole product design process from ideation and production through to advertising and consumers.
