3R Hanger: a sustainable solution for your wardrobe
Isabella Alevato
Project Description
The fashion industry is currently the second-largest polluter in the world, after the oil industry. The Pulse forecasts fashion emissions will grow by 63% in 2030. However, if people start wearing more of the clothes they already have or if they pass them on to someone who will, this impact can be diminished. For example, if we wear a garment 50 times instead of 5, 400% fewer carbon emissions are produced.
The 3R Hanger allows people to see which garments they barely wear to help them make a decision — whether they want to change their behaviour and start wearing it again, or donate it, either to a friend or an organisation. It can tell if a garment is not worn based on a button-activated timer that should be pressed when hanging clothes up. The hanger communicates to the user via two LED lights located on the hook. The yellow light turns on after nine months, and the red after 12 months. To guarantee that the information will only be given when needed, the lights can only be activated via remote control. Further development of this project could involve hangers with sensors to help brands control engagement with their products.
