NextStep

Project Description
NextStep is a step in the right direction for the future of Canine Prosthetics. By looking into the bespoke nature of the industry, a new approach to developing prostheses for mass manufacturing was realised. Focusing on the common amputation that occurs around the humerus of a dog's front leg, an attachment-based system was utilised to separate the mold of the dog from the device, allowing for a single design to be made for the leg.
Although many dogs can survive without a limb, the remaining three are more likely to be damaged by tissue degradation or muscle decay. If another leg is jeopardised, it's common for the dog to be euthanised. Recognising the necessity of prosthetics for many dogs in NSW, the existing system surrounding the supply and demand of prostheses is reimagined, with a new focus on accessibility and ease of supply. The need for intervention within veterinary practice to avoid euthanasia is fundamental to the betterment of our dogs’ lives as well our own, and removal of an owner’s guilt and an improved quality of life for their pets addresses these issues.
The completed final model was effective in demonstrating angles of movement within the leg and embodied all the key research factors, showing how the use of a product system in the world of prosthetics can assist with many fundamental issues. Creating a system that could potentially solve the issue with sourcing and developing prosthetics for our pets would revolutionise the safety of amputation surgery, reducing the risk of death or physical impairment.
