Watering indoor plants

Project Description

The Polar Nozzle responds to a user-centred design brief to create a garden hose nozzle, focussing on a target user. I chose to design the nozzle for home use in modern high density living situations such as apartments and townhouses. This required adaptability for watering gardens and plants in a relatively small outdoor setting, as well as balconies and indoor plants. This meant it needed to be comfortable, attractive, easily connected to a hose, easily stored, have a capacity large enough for watering indoor plants, and be robust and lightweight. The key design features to accommodate this include a hose attachment at the rear which has an adjustable stream rate and three of the most suitable spray patterns for the desired situations of use. The body of the nozzle can be filled at the spout and used as a vessel for watering indoor plants, and maintain the water without spilling when placed on its base. Ergonomics and anthropometrics were at the forefront of the design process, particularly in the section profile of the handle, locations of buttons and weight balance of the product when full and empty. Its aesthetic was thoughtfully considered so it can be put on display when it is not being used, making it more accessible and ultimately creating a more fulfilling gardening experience.
