Bento

by Brett Gordon

The Bento, in its folded-up state, provides more space in the home setting and declutters the room.

It combines functionality with aesthetics; the work environment can be out in the open rather than being tucked away in an office.

Place hand on either of the filleted surfaces and pull down the desk feature. Followed by pulling out the legs to ensure the table remains upright.

Wall bracket allows the Bento to be mounted securely to the wall.

Project Description

The Bento looks to help save space and provide a suitable work environment for consumers who live in apartments. We now live in an age where a pandemic has forced us to rethink the way we work from home.

The design uses a contemporary-styled wood aesthetic through innovative technologies that explore a user-centred design methodology.

Manufacturing of the product uses industry-standard steel wall brackets and mortise hinges to maintain strong structural integrity. The wood used is 25mm American white oak, as it has good overall strength and has the right steam-bending technology for manufacturing the corner curves and shape. CNC cutting machines can create the shelving, acrylic tabletops and slats with two sheets of material, to make sourcing the manufacturing technologies for the Bento attainable.

The wooden slats have square faces to stop them from moving when pulling down the desk frame.

An exploded-view shows all the parts and demonstrates how the product is assembled.
