Aven Support: Furniture Accessory
by Lauren Eskin
Project Description
Aven is a furniture accessory piece, designed to be both an arm support and side table for ottoman height seating. Meaning ‘to rise’, the main function of the piece is to assist people with mobility needs in the sit-to-stand movement. Created for gallery and museum spaces, the design is lightweight and strong, portable and stable. The design considers affordability and sustainability in materials and manufacturing, combining tubular steel with locally sourced recycled plastic from Defy Design.
Drawing inspiration from iconic Bauhaus furniture, the piece could be used in a variety of contexts such as shopping centres, venues, universities, workplaces, and even the home. People of all abilities and mobility levels can benefit from interaction with the product, and gain awareness of the importance of ergonomic and supportive furniture in public places through positive experiences. Aven promotes accessibility, inclusivity, education, sustainability and community engagement in design.
