MiniMix

Appearance Model of the MiniMix DJ system

Project Description

The MiniMix is a battery-powered, bare-boned, portable, all-in-one DJ system, curated towards beginners. This is achieved through the heavy reduction of conventional DJ features, reducing the intimidation factor significantly. By the same token, the system retains somewhat of a traditional aesthetic, meaning that functionality will remain familiar to more experienced users. The decks work synergistically with a companion app via Bluetooth, since the phone will act as the storage unit for the music. The integration of a mobile application enables intelligent functionality while reducing the required hardware.

The decks are powered by lithium-ion rechargeable batteries equating to 4400mAh, enabling 4-5 hours of portable mixing. This makes the system ideal for camping, travel, or any situation where wall power isn’t accessible. An acrylic lid adds additional protection during transport or acts as a platform during operation.

The inclusion of a crossfader and disproportionately large jog wheels was based on the desire to enable scratching functionality, which is an iconic technique commonly utilised by hiphop DJ’s. Performance pads operate the loop function, which assists with mixing house or techno music. Equaliser knobs of various heights provide control over three ranges of frequencies during performance.

Bio

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by design and had a deep appreciation for elegant solutions to complicated issues. Throughout high school, the design and technology elective was a major motivator for me, inspiring me to further my studies in the field at University. In first year, the aesthetics portion of design emerged as a focal point during my studies, leading me to develop a skill set that focuses on the conceptualisation and visualisation of Ideas. I pride myself on generating unique and original concepts and find the process of transforming an idea into a physical, real world solution to be truly captivating.
