Balance Desk Bed
by Carl Broesen
Project Description
The Balance Desk Bed is a product intervention in response to increased urbanisation combined with living through a pandemic in isolation; it reflects the need to sustain a healthy work-life balance within your home. Commonly, in high-density living and student accommodation scenarios, space is limited and already defined; therefore, a product that can be assembled on-site is necessary to fulfil multiple daily functions.
Using a design-led research approach, focusing on interaction design and prototyping as primary research, the Balance Desk Bed’s significance is that it re-designs how we use our spaces to balance work life and home life. It supports humans’ psychological well-being by physically changing the environment to the tasks afforded by its physical nature.
It is constructed from laminated 20mm birch plywood and proprietary parts that are globally abundant and sustainably sourced, meaning that this is a product that can be implemented worldwide. Its flat-packability allows for seamless assembly and takedown functions that occur throughout its entire lifecycle, making it easy to repair and replace parts as necessary.
