"A" Stool in Victorian Ash

Project Description

This project was an exploration of the evolving office and workspace environment. The standing desk is quickly becoming a staple in a modern office, but its counterpart, the office chair, is not versatile enough to match its adjustability and convenience. This project sought to redesign an office chair into a more flexible product that can support a user in a variety of positions.

The “A” stool features a unique seat mechanism that allows the seat to be tilted by up to 90° in either direction. This, combined with the maximum height, allows the chair to be used not only as a seat but also as a backrest while in a standing position.

The stool was handmade from Victorian Ash through the use of hand and power tools. The hardware was created from galvanized steel scaffolding jacks. It was finished with two coats of Tung Oil.

Most of the construction was done using traditional woodworking tools and machines, but modern machines such as 3D printers and laser cutters were utilised to create custom jigs and templates.

Bio

Hi, I'm Alisher. I'm a third-year product design student based in Sydney. My entire life I've been interested in making things and tinkering with products to see how they work; I think that's what inspired me to go down this career path. I enjoy and subscribe to the entire design process but my passion lies in the physical making of products and prototypes. I love working with my hands, whether that be with hand tools or power tools and, I'm always looking to try new things and pick up new skills. I am also interested in additive manufacturing and the idea of designing for 3D printing as opposed to designing parts to be injection moulded. My hobbies include woodworking and 3D printing. I often find myself combining the two by printing dovetail guides, honing guides, tool holders, etc. My ideal job would be a furniture design-maker, someone who goes through the design process but also the making process.
